In early American history, groups identifying themselves as “True Born Sons of Liberty”, “Sons of Liberty”, "Liberty Boys” and the “Daughters of Liberty” existed in almost every colony. A network soon connected groups in numerous villages and cities throughout the land. Members included many notable early American heroes, such as Paul Revere, Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and John and Samuel Adams.
In Boston, the Sons of Liberty gathered under a large elm tree, which became known as the Liberty Tree. Decorated with banners and lanterns, assemblies were regularly held under the tree to express views and vent emotions. News of the Liberty Tree spread throughout the Colonies and soon became a rallying point for the patriots.
